2010 SUMMER SCHOOL UPDATE
At the January 21, 20010 CUSD Board Meeting, Dr. Michelle Steagall, Associate Superintendent of Curriculum Services, outlined a plan for the District to continue to offer summer school programs in 2010, even while many other districts in the state have been forced to eliminate all summer offerings. In order to be able to continue summer school, CUSD staff have creatively structured a program that provides students with access to intervention and original credit courses at a significantly reduced cost to the District.

The proposal, on which the Board will take action at its February 10 meeting, would include an increased number of on-line and independent study courses for students, the consolidation of high school summer school to a single site, offering elementary summer school at only three sites, and a continuation of extended year services for special education students. While many CUSD high school students interested in taking summer school courses will be directed into independent study and on-line classes, a limited number of on-site classes will be available for students identified as most in need of targeted academic intervention. Additionally, through a federal grant the District will continue to offer its Accelerated English Academy to English learner students.

If approved by the Board, this summer school model will allow the District to continue to offer a much-needed academic resource for students, while contributing more than $1 million toward balancing the 2010-2011 budget. More information about CUSD’s 2010 Summer School program including the school calendar, budget and sites will be presented to the Board with the February 10 agenda material. Questions about 2010 Summer School can be directed to the Curriculum Services office at 559-327-9350.

CLOVIS WEST RECOGNIZED

FOR CLOSING ACHIEVEMENT GAP

Nineteen Clovis Unified schools have been singled out by California’s business community for breaking down barriers to student learning.  The schools are 19 of the 1,304 California public schools announced today as 2009 Honor Roll Schools by California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE) Foundation.  The CBEE Honor Roll is made up of two different awards, the Star Schools Award (395 schools) and Scholar Schools Award (909 schools).

“It is clear that dedication, hard work and high standards continue to pay off for students in our district,” said Superintendent Dave Cash, Ed.D.  “Having this prestigious business organization recognize so many of our schools means that we are on the right track in improving the lives of all students in our community,” Cash said.

Cedarwood, Century, Copper Hills, Dry Creek, Freedom, Garfield, James S. Fugman, Liberty, Maple Creek, Red Bank, Riverview and Valley Oak elementary schools and Clovis West High School received the Scholar Honor Roll award for achieving significantly high levels of student achievement by every student subgroup.

“Schools on the Honor Roll dispel the myth that certain students can’t reach grade-level proficiency and that schools with a challenging student population won’t be able to succeed,” said Greg Jones, CBEE Chair. “These schools are overcoming challenges every day.”  For more information about the award program and the CBEE Foundation visit www.cbee.org.

School Assessment Review Team (S.A.R.T.)

Each school in the Clovis Unified School District has a S.A.R.T. Committee. The S.A.R.T. Committee does not duplicate or assume the functions of other school organizations such as the School Site Council or the Parent Club. Rather, the S.A.R.T. Committee is concerned about the overall operation of the school. It serves as a community forum for communication and assessment of the school programs and as an advisory body to the principal.

One of the functions of this committee is to oversee the annual SART Survey.  The results of this year's survey can be viewed by clicking on this link
